Charming old house with authentic pub. Very friendly staff, good food, great live music. Spacious room with comfortable beds.Partly noisy in the room, as the historic windows let through every noise from outside (street, church bells). Very low water pressure in the bathroom.Good starting point for excursions in the region.

Village Pub , very quaint and quirky with hops hanging from beams , real ale pub . Very friendly and warm welcoming staff , our room was one of the smaller ones but adequate , beds soft and very clean, nice rainfall shower, close to boating on the river and half mile from the steam railway , overlooks village green playing cricket.Breakfast was superb - rasher of bacon about 10mm thick more like a steak , well cooked , well presented . Small place as only 5 rooms i think but defiantely a warm friendly place to stay , couple of maintenance issues were dealt with quickly without any fuss , no air con(old building what do you expect)so maybe take your own fan like we did just to keepo cool.Church across the road is a useful alarm clock if you have forgotten yoursWould be happy to stay here again

Room was small but very clean. Comfortable beds and good supply of tea/coffee/hot chocolate/milk. Bathroom clean with a modern shower.Only drawback was noise from kitchen extractor fan outside window which luckily was turned off when kitchen closed at 6,30 pm as it was a Sunday. Noise would have been too much had it been a day when kitchen was open for longer and you wanted an early night. Also we weren’t able to close the sach window which needs a bit of maintenance. Meals from kitchen were very good and very generous portions. Staff kindly let my friend and I have a children’s portion of evening meal. Being in our 80’s we can’t manage a full sized portion especially as these were so large. All of the staff and the proprietor were friendly and extremely helpful. A very pleasant stay.

We had a lovely stay in this wonderful old inn. A great location for getting out and about in the countryside with the River Rother and Kent & East Sussex Railway nearby, as well as a short drive to many nearby homes and gardens. The landlord was very friendly, serving a very nice breakfast and dinner. The bedroom might have had old beams and wonky walls but it had the best bathroom I've seen in a long time.

Was warmly welcomed at The White Hart to start my husband’s birthday weekend by Joe.We arrived for lunch and was shown to our room.A lovely large room with a huge roll top bath!Worth noting the comfy bed too.Joe explained we had missed dinner when I went down much later but it was no problem for the chef to cook us something like scampi and chipsor prepare a cheese board (which is actually what we wanted). The portions here are big and we enjoyed all the food we had.Breakfast was lovely and nothing too much trouble (even a later check out) which was more than agreeable by the Manager/owner.Ellie-May checked us out who like Joe, was delightful. All in all a wonderful stay, would love to come back to try more from the menu and bar!

Cards on the table. We are biased. This is a place we come back to as often as we are able. The food is always excellent. especially the Sunday roast. This visit included mothering Sunday. The restaurant was busy from noon on wards but the staff were efficient, smiling and nothing was too much trouble for them. That the kitchen was able to produce so many faultless meals was a testament the quality of both the ingredients and the staff.A new addition since our last visit is the steak menu.Dry aged steaks that you can see in their own refrigerated cabinet. The steaks I had during our stay were amongst the best I have ever had. It is a quality chef who can cook a very well done steak (I know but it's how I like it!) and keep it juicy and tender and mine were both. The rooms as always were comfortable, clean and well appointed.Looking forward to our next stay already.

This is a very old coaching inn I think as it is on an A road to Rye and full of beams, inglenooks and character. It has a very welcoming atmosphere and a nice pub and restaurant downstairs with rooms upstairs. Our room was immaculately clean and comfortable and nicely fitted out as far as possible within the constraints of what I expect is a listed building. The breakfast and restaurant food were excellent, we ate dinner in the restaurant twice and it far exceeded pub grub, more like posh nosh!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the White Hart. Our host and his staff were friendly, welcoming and helpful. The building is very old and interesting, with lots of beams and sloping floors in places! Our room was lovely and clean, with everything we needed. We thoroughly enjoyed our breakfasts and the couple of evening meals we had. Car parking was challenging at times, being busy in the early evenings. With no marked spaces, cars weren't always efficiently parked and there were no designated spaces for blue badge holders. That's the only criticism though - we would definitely recommend this place and hope to stay here again.

We booked 3 rooms for members of our family to stay in as we were going to a party six miles away. Our trip down from Leicestershire was prolonged by heavy rain and heavy traffic, so it was lovely to arrive at the White Hart and its warm welcome. Planned a distance walk from Appledore to Newenden. Picked the White Hart to stay at, did not disappoint. I had just walked 25.5km so I was in a right state when I arrived (thanks for not commenting). 😂Beer selection was excellent, my roast dinner was extremely good, and staff were super helpful and friendly.I had room 2 which was huge. Very comfortable bed and chairs. Plenty of pillows. The coffee/tea set up in the room I don’t think anyone can complain about, it has everything and it’s quality. Massive bathtub that was excellent for soaking in but also a separate shower. All look very new and of good quality. Really nice room.Breakfast was perfect, the people are great. I will define back when I’m not too exhausted to enjoy the garden.Really appreciated everything.

I stayed for work - I was filming a wedding the following day. The staff were all very accomodating and the locals were lovely and friendly too. Great atmostphere, quiet - I got an early night and fell asleep at 9.30pm with no noise disruption and fantastic food. Would happily stay again over and over!

This is an historic pub, with low beams, an inglenook fireplace with a proper wood fire, and local real ales, kept well. The landlord and the staff are all friendly and welcoming. Our room was in the oldest part of the pub, but it was spacious and sensitively refurbished, with a good-sized en-suite bathroom. The food is plentiful and, in my opinion, perfectly positioned, being unpretentious wholesome pub food, while also being very good quality and a few steps above the most basic. It’s what you really want from pub food. Considering the way prices have risen in the last year, it was also pretty good value. For those of you who like/believe in such things, there is also a resident ghost!

I knew the White Hart from previous visits in the past. With an inglenook fireplace, oak beams, hops hanging above the bar, you won't find a better or more traditional country pub.The beers are excellent as is the food and reasonably priced. This time I booked a room and stayed the night as I was attending a function in the pub.The room was basic but comfortable, though there are bigger and more comfortable rooms available.I was in the rear of the pub and it was very quiet even though the pub is on the main road.Perfect.I have always found the pub staff and clientelle to be really friendly and have always had a great time.I thoroughly recommend the White Hart to all visitors whether just popping in for a quick beer or a meal, and for those who are visiting the area for a longer period.

We stayed here to attend our friends' wedding nearby. They were very accommodating and had our room ready early so we could get changed before the wedding. Lovely comfortable room in an original 16th century building. Great breakfast too and even had a vegan option for my ever-hungry husband. Thank you!

We had a fabulous time. We stayed with our 3 year old daughter, who would sleep in our bed. The room was lovely, clean, rain shower and bath tub!, comfortable bed, warm. The atmosphere in the dining area as well as adjacent pub was great. A charming 15th century building with the most impressive fireplace I have ever seen. Great food and really friendly staff. They have a nice garden with a little play area for children and lots of parking space. We had a wonderful stay and will consider returning in the summer ☺️Thanks to everyone.

Came here for an overnight stay to escape a sleepover by 10 x 9yo girls celebrating our granddaughter's birthday.Started with a drink in front of the inglenook fireplace, then just chatted and chilled until dinner time (which they were happy to bring forward)Food was high quality pub grub, way above average, but not "precious" service was great, informal, friendly, but attentive.Bed was comfortable and room was spacious (a free upgrade) clean and tastefully furnished. After a good night's sleep the full english breakfast was served piping hot on oversized square plates (also hot) it might be a small thing but not many places manage to bring everything to the table, all at the optimum temperature at the same time, Coffee and juice were topped up without one having to ask or leave the table, the log fire was already well-alight at breakfast and was a great focal point.Plenty of room in the car park, decent quality fast broadband, no hidden extras of any kind.We drove on to Bodiam Castle, a few minutes away, on a cloudless winter's day and were among the first through the gate, which made the overall experience perfect. If you are looking for a base to explore the very best countryside of Sussex and Kent you would do well to consider the White Hart.

Another great stay. Cards on the table I am biased. We have been coming to stay at the White hart for several years now.If it wasn't any good we would not keep coming back.A traditional 17th (?) century inn with a huge roaring firepllace. Great quality well kept ales. (The brewery from the local brewery drinks his own brew here so he must know something!) From the moment you walk in the door there is a warm welcome from a team that all seem happy to be there. The food we had was amazing and the sunday roast one of the best we've ever had.We are counting the days until we can come down and stay again. As you may see from our other reviews of the White Hart don't expect a generic hotel experience but if you want a quirky tradional British Inn full of great things and great people this is the place.

We stayed at the family room which is on the road side. The bed was a bit too short for my husband but it was very comfortable. The extra sofabed was ok, although a bit hard on one side. The road was quite noisy, but in the night there wasn't so much traffic, so it was ok. The pub is very nice; very good food and pizza's too, very friendly staff, gave us also good information about where to go. And you can feel the history, especially in the fire place. Garden nice with stunning view.

As a couple of touring cyclists the accommodation and restaurant were ideal for us.Secure Bike storage was also provided. The room I stayed was spacious and clean with all the usual facilities - this is an extremely old building but excellently maintained, the only downside to this was the creaky floors and thin walls so you could hear people moving around when coming to bed and as the Inn is right on the road the traffic was quite noisy at times. All in all though an enjoyable visit and would recommend for someone on a tour.

With another cycling friend, we stayed at the White Hart and enjoyed our stay. The rooms are clean and comfortable, the shower is excellent (always important for cyclists) and it is possible to keep the bike locked overnight. The restaurant is superb and the prices are reasonable. Breakfast is missing a little in diversity but is acceptable.

I was so impressed by my stay at the White Hart. The room was beautiful with everything I could need, but it was the service I received from Page on arrival that I was so grateful for. I arrived much earlier than my check in time after a long car journey, hoping I might be able to get changed for a wedding - she not only quickly sorted my room so I could get changed but she even got me a coffee! So welcoming and such a lovely place to stay - wished I'd been able to stay longer! Thank you!

Booked the Room for My 83 Year Old Father for an initial 3 Night stay over last Christmas, which we cancelled and re-arranged for early April ‘22 due to COVID - With No issues - We have a Caravan locally and booked him in to the Pub where they could not have been more caring and considerate to my Father during his stay - The Pub has a lovely atmosphere whether there are locals at the bar or it’s empty - So homely and welcoming. The Room was perfect, in keeping with the age and quirkiness of the pub but at the same time fitted with modern Shower & WC, whilst being lovely and clean.A MASSIVE Thank You to Landlord Ivan and his Staff who’s care and attention paid to my Father During his stay is greatly appreciated.Highly Reccomend.

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the beautiful White Hart in Newenden. The staff were helpful, professional, warm and friendly. The White Hart is a real gem. Our room was modern, clean and comfortable. Dining in the restaurant in the evening was most enjoyable. A good selection of dishes with generous portions. Our ribeye steaks were cooked perfectly, served with fresh locally sourced tasty vegetables and salad. I'd guess the chips were cooked in duck or goose fat. The dessert "salted caramel brownie", one of the best I have ever tasted and the cheese board sublime, and again generous. An excellent selection of beers and some of the finest made literally up the road by the smart and dedicated people at the Rother Valley Brewing Company. The breakfast "The White Harty" was just the ticket to set us up for the day before the short walk to the local station and boarding the steam train and exploring on the Kent and East Sussex Railway. A wonderful team at the White Hart and we look forward to visiting again. 10/10

Hubby and I stayed at this lovely pub for a couple of nights whilst visiting East Sussex & Kent.We were welcomed to the pub and shown to our room, which was Vinson (room 1),it's a large open room with a beamed ceiling and the old fireplace utilised for the tea/coffee/kettle etc.The room looked out onto the neighbouring Oast house, fields and the car park,a couple of chairs and a table placed at the window was pleasant to sit at.There is a lovely en suite bathroom with a vanity table which was a lovely touch. There was a slight problem with the bathroom door not closing as the latch was bent, this was sorted efficiently by the staff. We ate here both nights, sat in the lovely garden first evening with spaced benches for social distancing and the 'stables'looked cosy. The food was very good and the staff friendly, food service was quick. We would both recommend the BanoffeeSundae if you like a dessert. The real ale on tap is from local breweries and the usual lagers etc.Breakfast in the morning was served in the restaurant by the landlord,it was a good breakfast with cereal/yogurts/fruit,juices/tea & coffee and various options of cooked breakfast, tasty food which was served efficiently and quickly. The atmosphere in the pub was friendly and the staff very helpful. The whole place was very clean and tables washed down regularly. The White Hart is a good base for visiting local areas such as Rye, Bodiam, Dungeness etc.it was lovely to go back to after a day of visiting places.

My only criticism and it’s minor was the price £80 I think £60 would have represented fair value, that aside I would recommend it highly.

We had a smaller room with twin beds but very comfortable. Some of the double bedded rooms looked wonderful.Very old, interesting place. Would have preferred a kettle in the room rather than the machine that was there.

Enjoyed a lovely weekend at the White Hart, Newenden. A building steeped in history, with low beams and oozing with character in a very historic village. We stayed in room 2, Waterfields. Our photographs probably don't do it justice but it is a huge room with modern decor and furnishing balanced with the traditional beams and quirky layout of a building some 400 years old. Loads and I mean loads of storage of storage space, extremely comfortable bed and a huge bath just make the stay even more memorable. And at this unique challenging time, we were impressed with their Covid cleanliness measures. Very hearty breakfast served, promptly served by very welcoming hosts. Though we didn't spend an evening in the bar due to other plans it looked very cosy with the log fire ablaze and warm friendly atmosphere generated by the staff and patrons. We would definitely return and especially consider this in the next two months as we noticed they are offering a stay for 2 and get an additional night for free offer during October and November, on a very reasonably priced room anyway. Thank you again all at the White Hart.

Room very pleasant to be in and comfortable in every respect. I like to read in bed and the bedside light does not give sufficient light for that so the full light has to be on. It is just a minor point. The staff were all very welcoming and helpful. Dinner was well cooked, had good flavour and was satisfying. The minute steak was a bit sinewy and chewy.

We enjoyed our two nights at the White Hart. The pib was full of character and our room was comfortable. It was the perfect amount of time to explore and enjoy the area of Newenden. The pub is in good distance of many seaside towns and also has the benefit of local attractions too, such as walks along the river Rother and the Boating Station. The staff were friendly and the food was good. Thanks for having us!

Clean comfortable room. Excellent shower although would be handy to have a hook or rail for the towels. But that’s a minor thing.Pleasant chatty staff and a delightful breakfast with a good selection of options.Would recommend .
Response
We\'re glad you enjoyed your stay and are thrilled that you would recommend us, we can\'t ask for any more than that!(Apologies about the towel hooks. There is a an over door hook system for towels and having checked the room after your visit found it to be facing the wrong way so couldn\'tbe used when in the bathroom.We\'ve sorted this now but, once again, please accept our apologies).

Stayed 6/7/20 - 9/7/20What a lovely gem of a find. I as a bit reticent to stay anywhere given these ever changing times. I went because my child and 12 friends went camping 300meters away at the Bodmin Boating station (lovely campsite) The cleanliness of The Whitehart was exceptional. The customer service went above and beyond. Nothing I asked for was too much trouble and was handled professionally and warmly. The breakfast was delicious and filling and the suppers were delightful.Ivan the owner and his staff always made sure that I was comfortable and that I had everything that I needed. Wonderful establishment. Thank you to all of the staff at the Whitehart.

Excellent accommodation , food and atmosphere. If you like an old worlde traditional but comfortable environment then this fits the bill. The floor may not be level , the joinery at angles and the walls not always upright but it has heaps of charm and interest, it beats the more modern 'Inn'location any day. The owner is there to serve and to see that all is ok. We will be back.

A very friendly and accommodating hotel. Good food served in a friendly bar or restaurant. The rooms retain plenty of the old character and have been sympathetically modernised. The en-suite was less luxurious.
Response
Thank you for your lovely comments. The en-suite bathroom, although perfectly functional, we agree, does not compliment what is a lovely room.As part of our programme to continually improve our guest accommodation works are scheduled to redesign and refit the en-suite, to provide a larger more modern bathroom.Thank you for staying with us and for taking the time to post a review.Kind regards, The White Hart

Great place for a short break especially if visiting the many local sites of interest - Bodiam, Great Dixter, Sissinghurst, Rye etc. Excellent food (both breakfast and evening meal) with a good selection of vegetarian options. Sunny beer garden with plenty of places to sit. Bedroom and en suite had everything you’d need and were clean and tidy. My room was at the side/back of the building over the kitchen so although there was some noise from the kitchen it was quiet by 10ish (once service had finished). Comfy bed. Helpful and friendly proprietor and staff - evening staff are worthy of special mention for this; they were very good at their job, very helpful and approachable.

The room was spacious and clean and the helpful landlord provided us with a kettle and teabags when we couldn't get the hang of the fancy coffee machine! We really enjoyed our stay at The White Hart. The pub is really old with loads of character. It offered a good breakfast and had a comprehensive menu. The bed was very comfortable and the room was small but well decorated, fresh and clean. As with old building there are lots of nooks and crannies, creaky stairs and wobbly windows which add to its' charm. The location is excellent with lots of places to visit nearby. We would definitely recommend The White Hart and would be happy to stay again. Thank You.

The reason for our stay was due to me needing some surgery at an ungodly hour in a nearby hospital. On hearing this the staff made everything so convenient for us, arranging for our needs in an amazing way. Breakfast at my wife’s convenience, allowing my wife and family to use all the facilities even after our official check out time. In addition the meal we had the previous night was loved by all of us, with two young children, that’s not normally the case. Can’t thank all at the White Hart enough, and we will definitely be back.

I'll start by saying I am biased. We love the white hart and come down for a couple of days as often as we can. What is not to like? The food is great, the beer is great, the locals are welcoming, the staff is fantastic. It is in our opinion everything a good British pub should be.As I have said before it is a working pub and so you should expect some noise. Its floors are not level, there is no lift but if those sort of things are important to you then there are many hotel chains only too happy to take your money. But if you are looking for a warm welcome, home cooked locally sourced food including a range (6, when we visited) vegetarian options, great local real ales and a variety of beers, comfortable bedrooms if you chose to stay over and above all, a warm welcome then visit the White Hart. You'll be glad you did.We will be back soon.

A simple kettle would be better than this modern affair ! A shelf by basin required for washing items . The very narrow beading inadetaqute Also bathroom light too limited for shaving

Great food and beer and well-appointed rooms. This is a gem of a pub.Full of character and characters. Yes the floors are slopey and there is some road noise but if you want a REAL experience 0f a REAL English pub this is it.We have already booked our next stay.Be prepared for some traffic noise and bar noise as this is a working pub and a hub of the local community.Looking for a Hilton go elsewhere. Looking for a great pub with great beer great foodand a great welcome the White Hart is the place.

This ancient village inn on the A28 is a solid, traditional choice for budget travelers touring National Trust properties in the Weald. The Sibley room is small and quaint and nicely set up. It had a lovely, misty sunset view over arable fields. Excellent locally sourced food in the popular restaurant - the wild mushrooms at dinner and delicious Full English breakfast were very enjoyable. The landlord was chatty and friendly, and I very much appreciated his manager's open-ness to accommodating environmentally sensitive guests with fragrance-free products. It makes a big difference to travelers! Thank you.
