About Us

The White Hart

Our History

The White Hart is a 16th Century Inn situated in Newenden, Kent, rich in history and significance to the surrounding areas. Newenden, which dates back as early as 791 AD having been established by the Anglo Saxons, runs along the River Rother which operated as a well known smuggling route for sea bound sailors, as well as those transporting goods to Rye in the early 1500's. The White Hart, which once stood among sixteen other Inns in Newenden alone and now stands as the last, was originally founded in 1591 and became popular with travelling smugglers, as well as local farmers. Additionally, there are also references by King Edwards men in the 1300's to a game once known as 'Creag' being played in the field opposite the pub, suspected to be the foundations of the game we now know as Cricket, something our local Cricket team are very proud of! As a traditional Inn we do come with the fair share of Ghost stories, with sightings dating back to the mid 1900's of who we now refer to George the Ghost, with many observers referring to him as a middle aged man in old styled farming attire, but don't worry, he is more than accommodating!
